With graduation just around the corner, NOMOS Glashütte CEO Uwe Ahrendt tells us why the new Club Campus is the perfect choice for younger watch buyers looking for their first mechanical timepiece
We all remember it well: that sweet feeling of relief when you put your pencil down and finish your final exam. For many, university graduation is almost here – and what better way to celebrate this huge milestone than with a beautiful mechanical watch you can cherish forever?
German brand NOMOS Glashütte is ready for the occasion with its youthful new Club Campus line, which is now available here at Watches of Switzerland.
The achingly cool Club Campus line is deliberately aimed at the younger generation looking to buy their first mechanical watch. It’s unisex, too: the Club Campus has a 36mm case and a white silver-plated dial, while the Club 38 Campus (complete with anthracite-coloured strap) and the Club 38 Campus Nacht (featuring, as its German name suggests, a dark ruthenium-coated dial) both boast a beefier 38mm case. And if you want to make the watch a truly special gift, you can also have the case back engraved with a message of your choice. Prices start from £1,000.
We caught up with NOMOS Glashütte’s CEO, Uwe Ahrendt, to find out how the Club Campus went from an idea to an A-grade watch collection.
Uwe Ahrendt: We know that starting an independent life isn’t always easy, but we think that a good watch can help. It serves as a reliable accompaniment for whatever life brings next—whether that is a trip around the world, further studies, or a job interview. With the Campus series, NOMOS Glashütte has produced three watch models for the next generation. We are very enthusiastic about these new customers, for whom there has been nothing on the market until now.
WoS: How has it been received?
UA: All three models of the Campus series were very well received—we are very delighted about that.
WoS: Why did you decide to create two different sizes – 36mm and 38mm?
UA: Quite simply, we wanted to offer more choice. So the Club Campus comes in a classic size of 36mm, which suits more slender wrists. However, we wanted to offer something more masculine as well, which is why Club 38 Campus and Club 38 Campus Nacht come in a case size of 38 mm.
WoS: Let’s talk about the retro California dials. Where did that idea come from?
UA: There has always been a lot of potential in Club. It has always had a youthful, sporty-yet-classic aesthetic—and by combining Arabic and Roman numerals with indexes on the dial, we gave it a fresh twist for the next generation.
And since the Campus series is a perfect graduation gift, we liked the idea of a watch that speaks multiple languages—after all, we all need to these days!
WoS: Why do you think there’s a current trend for smaller-sized watches and more pared-back design?
UA: We have noticed the trend towards smaller diameters – or you could say ‘more classic’, as it ties in with the increased demand for vintage watches these days. At NOMOS Glashütte, however, you can find timepieces with this attractive aesthetic that also feature entirely modern technology.
We are not the only brand currently designing clean watches with a focus on fine details, rather than on the large and ostentatious. The difference is, this is exactly where we have positioned our brand from the very beginning.
WoS: NOMOS watches are equally popular with male and female customers at Watches of Switzerland. How do you approach creating timepieces that appeal to both genders?
UA: We produce watches that are clearly contemporary, mature, and straightforward; elegant timepieces that are suitable for work and everyday life. NOMOS watches simply complement the wearer—and women and men alike appreciate our dedication to the fundamentals of good design. But, of course, some models appeal more to women, such as the 33 Series, the champagne-coloured neomatik models, and the signal blue and signal red models of our new Aqua series. By contrast, Lambda with a 42mm diameter, and the Zürich model, are very masculine watches in both their aesthetics and size.
WoS: Where do you see the brand in 10 years’ time?
UA: Things are going well for NOMOS Glashütte, so we want to continue our healthy growth, secure independence for the company and strengthen our position in the market. And we also look forward to expanding our presence further in international markets such as the USA, the UK, Asia and the rest of Europe. We are aiming for the same brand recognition abroad that we enjoy in Germany.
In terms of our products, we will continue to invest in research and development. After all, customers value what NOMOS Glashütte stands for: high-tech production and traditional craftsmanship, combined with prize-winning design.
